Hickory Nut Falls is located at Chimney Rock State Park in Chimney Rock, N.C. The hike to the base of the falls is about 1 mile each way and is easy to moderate. It is difficult to see the entire falls from the base and depending on the time of day it may be difficult to get pictures due to all the people around the base. Good pictures of the upper falls can be obtained from the highway at the bottom of the mountain with a zoom lens. A tripod is a must for pictures at the base and a polarizer fiter is recommended due to the glare during midday. There is a fee to go into to the park but it also allows access to all the trails and to the Chimney Rock, where the view is fantastic.
